• Bette Midler, icône gay (Gay icon)
|
• Audacious, brazen, funny, and perhaps the unconscious inspiration for Madonna's shows, Divine Madness makes an absolute spectacle of itself. Bette Midler's raunchy, entertaining persona is on high in this concert film filmed in Pasadena. Midler tells dirty jokes, berates herself and the audience, and most of all belts out (some may say shrieks out) covers of Bruce Springsteen and rock and swing classics.
» Somewhere between "Everything's Comin' Up Roses" and "Vogue," Midler seems a bridge between eras, that of burlesque, do-anything-to-please-'em showmanship and shocking, pyrotechnic exhibitionism and aloofness. (A hint at just how old this 1980 movie feels, Midler unabashedly makes a reference to Georgie Jessel!)
» Directed by Michael Ritchie, whose Smile and The Bad New Bears were interesting takes on America, Divine is also a slice of the American experience. It's dirty enough to be fun and clean enough to stay just this side of bawdy. That used to be a fine American tradition.
» Note: The songs "Shiver Me Timbers" and "Rainbow Sleeve," which appeared in the theatrical release of this picture, are not included in this DVD. That's a shame because with Midler, more is more. --Keith Simanton
• Bette Midler plays a Janis Joplin-like singer overwhelmed by stardom and its excesses. Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) directs what is a kind of hybrid showcase for Midler's concert talents and a standard pop biopic, with the usual rhythms of desire, success, betrayal, failure, and such. Alan Bates is the best thing about the movie as the Rose's ruthless manager, and Harry Dean Stanton and Frederic Forrest add some interesting seasoning. But as a whole, the film can't rise above its mixed purposes or clichés. --Tom Keogh

One of America's most prolific actresses was born Doris Mary Ann Von Kapplehoff on April 3, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
While filming for Warner Brothers, she met Martin Melcher, who became her agent and later, on her 27th birthday, her husband. In 1958 her brother Paul died and it was around this time that her husband started to make her sign to do films that she did not want to make. This eventually led to her becoming ill from nervous exhaustion. By the time he died in 1968, Doris was bankrupt and owed thousands of dollars - it turned out that he had squandered virtually all the money she had ever made - but she was eventually awarded $22 million by the courts. She married for the fourth time in 1976 and since her divorce in 1980 has devoted her life to animals.
Today, at 80 years old, Doris Day runs the Doris Day Animal League in Carmel, California, which advocates homes and proper care of household pets.

Trivia for With Six You Get Eggroll (1968) @ imdb.com
The Grassroots is the band that performed the song "Feelings" in a nightclub.
This was Doris Day's final big screen appearance, following a 20 year career in the movies.
The final scenes of this film feature Doris Day teary-eyed, wearing a housecoat and slippers.
When her husband of 17 years Martin Melcher died suddenly just after production was completed, gossip magazines at the time used stills of Day from this movie, looking distraught and out-of-sorts, to accompany their articles about Melcher's death.

PlanetOut : Navratilova settles credit card lawsuit
Martina Navratilova has settled her lawsuit against the sponsor of a credit card directly marketed to gays and lesbians.
The tennis star sued Do Tell Inc., which offers the Rainbow Card, in March because she disagreed with the way the card was being marketed.
Do Tell had used Navratilova to market the card since 1995 with the tennis star's permission, the suit said. But in late 2004, Navratilova became at odds with the card's marketing, which she called "inappropriate and repugnant."
On Feb. 8, 2005, Navratilova's attorneys sent a letter to Do Tell, based in Conshohocken, Pa., telling them to stop using the former Wimbledon champ's likeness. She objected to the card's being associated with the cable TV shows The L Word and Queer as Folk, calling the shows depraved, Do Tell said in court papers.
Terms of the settlement, reported to the judge handling the case last week, were not released. Lawyers for both sides declined comment. Navratilova had been seeking at least $75,000 in damages.
Navratilova is a nine-time Wimbledon champion and winner of 18 Grand Slam singles titles. She also owns a record 167 singles titles and 40 Grand Slam doubles titles.
The Rainbow Card helps fund the nonprofit Rainbow Endowment, which promotes the health and social well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender LGBT people.

PlanetOut : Navratilova inks deal with Olivia
Patrick Letellier, PlanetOut Network
Thursday, March 24, 2005 / 05:13 PM
Tennis superstar Martina Navratilova has become a celebrity spokesperson for Olivia, a lesbian-owned travel company best known for its cruises for women.
As part of a six-figure, one-year contract with the company, Navratilova will make appearances at Olivia events, appear in print ads for the company, wear the company logo on her shirt and shorts during tennis tournaments and be a guest on Olivia cruises.
Navratilova, ranked among the world's top female athletes, has been open about being a lesbian for decades and has had difficulty securing corporate endorsements.
"This is the first deal I've gotten because I am gay," she told The New York Times. "Hallelujah."
"I've been fighting this negative connotation of an alternative lifestyle. It's not a choice, it's who you are, about not having to deny anything, but to celebrate who you are," she said.
Navratilova's endorsement by Olivia follows a similar deal struck last year between the company and another high-profile, openly lesbian athlete, golfer Rosie Jones, who at that time became the first professional athlete sponsored by a gay company.
"It's a terrific thing for us and for Martina," Olivia CEO, Amy Errett, told the PlanetOut Network. "Martina has been a trailblazer in being out. She's a delightful, very bright and grounded person. She's very comfortable in herself."
Navratilova's endorsement was announced Thursday at the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami, where she is competing in a doubles tournament. Navratilova holds 173 doubles titles, 167 singles titles, and she is tied with tennis great Billie Jean King for a record 20 wins at Wimbledon.
Two weeks ago, Navratilova sued a credit card company, the Rainbow Card, for misusing her image in advertising after she had asked the company to stop.
About Olivia's endorsement, she told the Times, "We're a perfect match. We just feel free about who we are. They've done it for many years, and I've been doing it for many years."
She also told the paper that though she has never gone on an Olivia cruise, she is excited to do so. "I just haven't had the time. I know friends who did and who've loved it," she said. "But it's too much sitting still."

PlanetOut : Record Wimbledon title eludes Navratilova
Tom Musbach, PlanetOut Network
Friday, July 1, 2005 / 04:47 PM
Elite lesbian tennis players Amelie Mauresmo and Martina Navratilova survived the early rounds at Wimbledon, with each advancing at least as far as the semifinals.
In fact, they played each other in the semifinal round of the women's doubles on Saturday. Mauresmo and her partner Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Navratilova and Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 6-4 6-4.
The Mauresmo-Kuznetsova pair could not repeat their winning ways in the final, losing to Africans Cara Black and Liezel Huber, 6-2 6-1.
Mauresmo's winning streak in singles ended Friday, when she lost in the ladies' semifinal match to top-seeded Lindsay Davenport, 6-7 7-6 6-4. The match began on Thursday but was halted during the third set because of rain.
Mauresmo, 25, was seeded third in the tournament, which is played on grass. For a brief period last year she was ranked No. 1 in the world.
Friday's loss was the French player's third in the Wimbledon semifinals.
Navratilova, a Wimbledon favorite, who at 48 continues to break records, was still a contender in both the ladies' doubles and mixed doubles going into the tournament's final weekend. But her hopes of capturing another record Wimbledon title were dashed on Saturday with two semifinal losses.
In addition to the women's doubles loss, she and her mixed doubles partner Mike Bryan lost to Ken Ulyett and Liezel Huber, 6-3 4-6 7-9.
According to news reports, Navratilova has been treated like a rock star by Wimbledon fans, some of whom have watched her play for decades. Many LGBT fans have also been watching from around the world.
"Martina's achievements are historic," said Sarah Warn, editor of AfterEllen.com. "Children of the '70s, '80s, '90s and today have been able to see a lesbian athlete consistently rank as one of the top players in the world, and her continued success in later years has challenged many stereotypes about women and older athletes."
Navratilova won the mixed doubles championship at Wimbledon in 2003 with Leander Paes of India. Last month the pair lost in a three-set struggle in the French Open championship.
Navratilova remains tied with Billie Jean King for winning the most Wimbledon titles; each has 20.

She was presented in the 45th year of Hall of Fame inductions by her former coach, transsexual Dr. Renee Richards. There was a crowd of about 4,000 despite cold, damp, threatening weather.
Richards said, "Did you see the Martina exhibit ["Martina the Magnificent"] in the Hall? Those nine silver Wimbledon plates, one for each championship -- she should give a dinner party." In an eloquent speech, Richards called Navratilova "a true freedom fighter." She said Navratilova "transcends the sport more than most -- the physical, the mental and the inspirational. One cannot teach courage and intensity. Martina raised the bar for women's tennis." Richards pronounced Navratilova "Magnificent Martina, the champion for all time."
Navratilova joked, "It's nice to be able to talk about yourself without feeling guilty or without having to pay somebody to listen to you." But it was a day among family, friends and fans who were only too glad to listen. She said, "I am completely honored to be inducted ... to be part of a building that houses not only the history of tennis but its future as well." She said, "I have given a big part of my soul to the game of tennis, but tennis has given me soul and that can never be repaid." She thanked all her coaches, saying, "They suffered with me, and they have my thanks." She also thanked all "the doctors who held me together, homeopathic people, osteopaths, massage therapists, and I'd like to thank my dogs for keeping me company throughout my career, even all the girlfriends who suffered through all the matches in the stands -- wherever they are."
In the Beginning
Her memory jogged by the presence of her mother and grandmother and having just visited her Czech birthplace of Revnice (outside of Prague), Navratilova recalled her beginnings. "We used to have to fix the courts in the spring. That was our membership dues. We'd spend about 20 hours pulling the weeds and putting the clay on, etc. My mother and [step] father [Mirek Navratil] met through me. When my father would take the clay to the court in the wheelbarrow, I would get in the wheelbarrow and he'd wheel me down. I was about 3 years old then. He liked me because I was smiling and so happy -- of course I was happy because he gave me a ride -- but that's how my parents met. So tennis not only brought my parents together, but then my parents being together brought me to tennis. It's a big circle. My parents taught me the game when I was seven. My grandmother and my mother made me eat carrot salad all the time -- good for the eyesight, they said."
Defection
At 17, Navratilova went professional, but the international travel of tennis didn't sit well with the communist regime in Czechoslovakia at the time. She said, "Jan [Kodes, who helped Navratilova leave the country and who was present at the ceremony] had standing in Czechoslovakia and he talked the tennis federation into letting me go to the U.S. Open in 1975. They weren't going to let me out of the country again; I was too independent. But Jan was persuasive thank God. And at risk to himself. My one regret is that I had to make that choice. I didn't want to leave my home and family, but it was the only way I could develop as a player and person. It was really no decision. If I wanted to play tennis I had to leave the country. The difficult part was doing it. I was 19, young and didn't think about the consequences of it. I had to make the choice. And what I regret the most is that I had to make that choice and that I can never have those years back with my sister, with my parents, with my grandmother. If I wanted to play tennis, I had to do it. Once I got out, I knew I couldn't go back."
Her mother Jana told the Associated Press of those times, "I hate communism. It was almost four years [that the USSR-controlled Czech government barred any contact with her daughter]. It's still hard to talk about." But at the induction, Jana told the Montreal Gazette that, "I'm so happy to be here, it's such a long way from where she started."
Homosexuality was grounds for barring immigrants, so Navratilova's lesbianism "was something I couldn't even talk about" until she was granted U.S. citizenship in 1981 [in the Los Angeles courtroom of fellow inductee non-player Judge Robert Kelleher, as it happened].
Career Turning Point
Many noted that one of the changes Navratilova brought to the game was an emphasis on physical conditioning, but she didn't start with that. She said, "I really started late as far as total commitment to the game and conditioning were concerned. The thing I have noticed the most in recent tennis is the stress the young people are putting on conditioning. Even the coaches are exercising. I was 26 when I really got going. I'm happy that I finally gave it my best shot.
"I was almost 26. It was 1981. I'd already won Wimbledon twice, but this year I got beat in the semifinals [after finishing in the quarterfinals of the French Open and the semifinals at Eastbourne], and I thought I was a failure. So did my friend and coach, Nancy Lieberman [also present at the ceremony]. She said, 'You're wasting your talent, not working hard, and you're getting older. It's disgraceful. You could be the best ever if you'd shape up. But it'll soon be too late.' I always said I would play until 30 and then we'll see. Thirty wasn't so far away. I'd better get going. So I did. I started working out that summer. Nancy was absolutely right. It was late to really start with a new outlook. But Nancy sold me on total commitment to the game. I went to the gym and started working out seriously. She worked me harder than I ever imagined. I'd been irresponsible, but I changed, thanks to her burning me.
"The one thing I can hold my head up [about] is that even though I got started late in my total commitment to tennis, once I figured it out, I stuck with it, just gave everything I had to the game in becoming the best player I could be and hopefully making others want to be that way as well. It's never too late to get going and achieve your goals, however lofty they might be."
Basketball great Lieberman-Cline gave her version of the story to the Montreal Gazette: "I remember going to French Open the first year. And I was thinking when we got back to the hotel, and then I asked Martina, 'When are you going to practice?' And she said, 'Well, I just did.' I went, 'You've got to be kidding me. You call that practice? You hit the ball for 15 minutes, you talk to Billie Jean [King], you wave to someone else, you hit an overhead and then we went back to the hotel. No wonder you don't win all the time. Your practice habits stink.'"
The Evert Rivalry
Navratilova said, "I was lucky to play against some amazing champions. Winning is great, losing is not often fun -- but the bottom line is enjoying the game." As for arch-rival Chris Evert, "What do you want me to say about it? It was wonderful to be one-half of the greatest rivalry in sports. Period. You may have team rivalries, but as for players, I can think of [boxers] Ali and Frazier, but how many times did they fight? Three? We had 80 battles in singles [Navratilova won 43, Evert 37] and many more in doubles. We played together in exhibitions. We made each other better."
Civil Rights Activism
As for her civil rights activism, Navratilova said, "It's important, and I think every piece of legislation is important. I will continue speaking out on behalf of gays and lesbians until we have equal access and protection under the law. I don't want it to be an issue, but it is because we don't have equal rights. Vermont is a start, but it's a small state. I couldn't be open until I got my citizenship. They would have refused a lesbian naturalization. It shouldn't be that way. We have it pretty well in this country -- but there could still be improvement."
Playing Doubles
Navratilova addressed former doubles partner Pam Shriver [who was present], saying, "One of our records they'll never break, Pam, is the 109 straight wins, 1984 - 85."
Shriver told the Boston Globe, "How can she not be called the greatest? Unimaginable numbers -- 167 singles, 165 doubles titles -- and the fact that for 20 straight years she was in the top four, most of the time number 1 or number 2." Remembering Navratilova's first U.S. Open singles victory in 1983, Shriver said, "I hugged her and congratulated her, [saying] 'It's been a long wait for a great player.' You know what she said? 'Bitch! If you hadn't beaten me in the 1978 semis, I'd've done it a lot sooner."
Of her recent return to professional doubles play, Navratilova remarked that when she retired in 1994, "I thought if I didn't pick up a tennis ball the rest of my life, I wouldn't need it. I was wrong." She said, "I'm looking for partners now for the [U.S.] Open. And if I'm in shape, I hope I can play next year. The beauty of the sport is the variety. If you take away the couples, you take away a great part of the game. Doubles should be written about more. The young people should know, if you play doubles you can become a better singles player."
By the Numbers
Navratilova won a record 167 tournament singles titles, 165 doubles titles (79 with Pam Shriver) and 1,438 singles matches. From early 1983 through December 1984, her record was 128 - 1. She was world number one in women's singles for a total of 331 weeks, and was world number one for the season for 5 consecutive years 1982 - 1987. Her Grand Slam titles included nine at Wimbledon, four at the U.S. Open, three at the Australian Open, and two at the French Open.

OSCAR 2007 ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
Wow, that feels as good as you think it does. I have to thank my incredible wife Tammy and our four children, Beckett and Bailey and Johnnie Rose and Miller. And everyone I've ever worked with. Just thank you, I love you, you know. And all the incredible people that worked on this film and gave so much. But mostly, I have to thank Al Gore for inspiring us, inspiring me, showing that caring about the Earth is not Republican or Democrat. It's not red or blue, we are all green. This is our job. Now we can become the greatest generation, the generation that changed, the generation that woke up and did something and changed. I love you all. Thank you Academy, this is great. Thank you

Title: Diabolique (1996)
Director: Jeremiah S. Chechik
With: Sharon Stone, Isabelle Adjani, Kathy Bates
Story
Two women, one plan. We'll poison the creep who treats us like dirt, they agree. We'll dump the body in a murky pool, and someone will find a surprise at the bottom. There's a surprise, all right. When the pool is drained and cleaned, no body is found.
Sharon Stone and Isabelle Adjani pour on the femme and the fatale in a diabolical grabber of a suspense thriller directed by Jeremiah Chechik (Benny And Joon) and based in part on the classic 1955 French spellbinder Les Diaboliques. Will the women get away with bloody murder? Has someone removed the body of the victim (Chazz Palminteri) and begun playing mind games with them? Add to the mix a tough cookie of a detective (Kathy Bates) and you've got the ingredients for "a nail-biter from the first scene to the last" (Bob Polunsky, Kens-TV/ San Antonio).
Histoire
